Stop Chasing Dollars And Start Chasing Freedom . . .

December 16, 2007

The WealthLoop Project    Perhaps the most important distinction I explore with my coaching clients is the relationship between "personal liberty" and "financial freedom."  To my mind, true personal freedom just isn't possible without also having achieved some measure of financial independence.

In exploring the topic, virtually 100% of my clients agree that money and wealth for the sake of accumulating ever more expensive trinkets gets old quickly.  Granted, the initial goals of any wealth creation plan should be to both fund your chosen lifestyle, and to accumulate a comfortable sum in reserve, but once such a "comfortable reserve" is achieved, the question next becomes, "Now what?" The answer to "Now what?" is the realization of true personal freedom.

Truthfully, "freedom" is the purpose of wealth — to be able to do mostly whatever you want to do, wherever and whenever you want to do it.  Money and wealth give you the luxury of living a life of personal sovereignty.

Lest you doubt that financial freedom allows for personal freedom, let's look at it from the standpoint of someone lacking in financial resources.  Picture a guy (or gal — either works) making $10 an hour at the widget factory. Is this person free?  Upon close examination we realize that this person is mostly not freeFor example, this person can only travel to the extent that traveling on a $10 an hour budget allows.  Everything in this person's life is constrained to fall within their $10 an hour budget.

Look more closely.  Who are the friends and associates that this person surrounds himself/herself with?  Odds are that a $10 an hour wife has a $10 an hour husband.  Chances are that all of this person's friends and associates are $10 an hour friends.  Their car, home, clothes, vacations, outside entertainment, schools for the kids, charitable donations, books, seminars (not that it's very likely that this person spends much on books and seminars — if they did they would be making more than $10 an hour) are all  limited to the extent of their $10 an hour budget.

This idea of wealth being the doorway to unlocking your true potential as a human being is a powerful distinction that often profoundly effects the thinking of those who embrace it.  Once you are financially free, you have the option to become totally free.  True, attaining wealth does not mean that you will somehow instantly become an enlightened and transformed individual, but it allows you the luxury of leisure, which is nothing more than the ability to pursue your interests however and wherever you see fit.

I would encourage you to consider the possibility of refocusing your desire for wealth towards the accumulation of freedom as opposed to the accumulation of money.  Many people find that chasing dollars gets old after awhile, but that chasing freedom gives them the energy and inspiration to pursue their dreams and goals with passion, which not so coincidentally is often the key distinction that causes a money WealthLoopTM to begin flowing ever more freely into their lives. www.guide to wealth.com
